An Ancient Practice
Heating gemstones to improve their colour and clarity is nothing new — the practice dates back over a thousand years. For corundum (sapphire and ruby), controlled heating can dissolve internal "silk," improve transparency, and deepen or lighten colour by altering the way trace elements are distributed within the crystal. Today the great majority of sapphires and rubies on the market have been heated.
Why Unheated Stones Are Rare
An unheated stone is one that emerged from the earth already displaying fine colour and clarity, with no thermal enhancement required. Such stones are genuinely uncommon — only a small fraction of rough is beautiful enough to be sold as-is. Because of this scarcity, a certified "no heat" sapphire or ruby of fine quality can command a premium of two to five times the price of an equivalent heated stone, and sometimes far more for top origins.
Heat Treatment Is Stable and Accepted
It is important to stress that heat treatment is permanent, stable, and fully accepted within the international gem trade — provided it is disclosed. A beautifully heated Ceylon sapphire is a legitimate, lasting, and lovely gem. The key word is disclosure: a buyer must always know whether and how a stone has been treated.
Beyond Heat: Other Treatments
- Oiling and resin filling: Emeralds are almost universally treated with cedarwood oil or resin to fill surface-reaching fractures and improve apparent clarity. Minor oiling is standard and accepted; heavy filling is disclosed as a significant treatment.
- Flux healing and glass filling: Lower-grade rubies may be treated with lead glass to fill cavities. These composite stones are far less valuable and must be clearly identified.
- Diffusion: Surface or lattice diffusion introduces colour-causing elements such as beryllium or titanium. This is a significant treatment that materially affects value.
- Irradiation: Used to alter colour in some gems such as blue topaz; stable but always disclosed.
How We Disclose Treatment at MineralsHub
Every stone we sell carries a clear treatment status — "No Heat / Untreated," "Heated," "Oiled (minor)," and so on — drawn directly from independent laboratory reports wherever certification exists. We believe full, honest disclosure is the foundation of trust. When you understand exactly what you are buying, you can buy with confidence.
